Any story that is part of a largely new mode
of folklore thriving in big cities, mainly in
the USA, in the mid-20th century, and passed
along, usually orally, and always at second
or later hand. Some of the material -
hitchhikers that turn out to be ghosts,
spiders breeding in elaborate hairstyles - is
preindustrial in origin, but transformed to
fit new circumstances; others, notably about
the pet or baby in the microwave oven or
about people living in department stores, are
of their essence entirely new.
